Week 9-Modernism and Post-Modernism

1. Outline the intentions of each artist.

For Chuck close: He is a Super-Realism person, Photorealism and New Realism. And he perfer to describe people who are close whith him, because he can realised their feeling and psychology, overthrow these elements to show the real life feeling to people. He wants to say how indiferrent in people's relationship.
For Claude Monet: He is quite interested for nature scenery. Also he likes to descibe the real life in his art work. But the different point with Chuck close is Monet more concentrate on the whole life, like people,  scenery and plan. But Chuck is more concentrate on one little point.Monet is a impressionism person, he always to go in for the light, fresh air and harmonious. From his art work, people can easy to understand that he is record the some story about his life.

2. Describe the techniques of each artist
Claude Monet is good whith sketching. He likes to painting lots plant, people and scenery.Monet always use oil painting or acryl painting.
Chuck Close's techniques is queite interesting. Someone say his work is looks like photos. Because before he painting, he always to take photo first, then use projector to blow up it and depicting. Close does not just use normal bursh, also he use some other tools like pen, air brush. This way could hlep him to painting more precise.

3. Find 2 quotes about each artists work, and reference them correctly
Claude Monet (French pronunciation: [klod mɔnɛ]), born Oscar Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926), was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.[1][2] The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Monet
Monet Paintings all the main canvases of the master of Impressionism: poppy field near Argenteuil, Impression Sunrise, the Magpie, the Seine at Vetheuil, series of Rouen Cathedral, Haystack, Water Lilies and more.

4. Note 3 similarities of the work of both artists.
First, basically both of them are quite good painter. They are like to show how they thinking through the painting work. Secondly, whatever what are  they painting, their painting are quite dramatic and lifelike. Thirdly, both these two artists, they really want to pursue harmonious and nicety.
5. What are some differences between the artist's work. (at least 3)
There have theree  different points between the artist's work. First, Monet is more concentrate on scenery and people's sketching,he is a impressionism people. And Close is more interested on people's face feature, he is a Super-Realism person. Secondly, Monet express his thinking and wish in virtue of painting some beautiful elements. And Close ecpress his thinking and wish in cirtue of painting some indefferent stuff.Thirdly, these artist's work is different way to painting.Monet is use tranditional painting way to create his work. But Close like to use some new painting idea and painting tools except for normal brush.

6. Describe your response to the work of both artists
Firstly, when I look at their art works, I feel quite comfortable, especially is Monet work.He is good with use light and shadow to create his painting, this way could lively description his painting.Monet's painting could attract peopel's attention. On Monet's painting, every single colour is looks quite soft, but if people looking global,,they will feeling the colour is strong. For Close's work,he could make people's expression pefect, it is like you are face to that real people.I am quite interesting his painting way, he just not use brush, also he would like to use some another tools, like pen,air brush. It quite useful to create the people's expression more exquisite.

7. Add any other comments you would like.
Although his later paintings differ in method from his earlier canvases, the preliminary process remains the same. To create his grid work copies of photos, Close puts a grid on the photo and on the canvas and copies cell by cell. Typically, each square within the grid is filled with roughly executed regions of color (usually consisting of painted rings on a contrasting background) which give the cell a perceived 'average' hue which makes sense from a distance. His first tools for this included an airbrush, rags, razor blade, and an eraser mounted on a power drill. His first picture with this method was Big Self Portrait, a black and white enlargement of his face to a 107.5 in by 83.5 in (2.73 m by 2.12 m) canvas, made in over four months in 1968, and acquired by the Walker Art Center in 1969. He made seven more black and white portraits during this period. He has been quoted as saying that he used such diluted paint in the airbrush that all eight of the paintings were made with a single tube of mars black acrylic.

Giverny France Claude Monet's village was also a colony of American painters at the turn of the 20th century. The village and its surroundings have been painted so often by so many impressionist artists that they now belong to the world of those who know it and love it.
Impressionist painters have a specific way of using colors. As most Impressionists Monet uses his own palette to paint shadows, black...

Week 7-Industrialisation and Cao Fei's RMB City

1. What and when was the Industrial Revolution?

The Industrial Revolution was a period from the 18th to the 19th century where major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions of the times. And the Industrial Revolution make the relationship of  all over the world are more close, also promote evolution of the mordern city . People's life style and ideas had been a huge change.
2.Research both Modernist paintings in order to comment on the subject matter, form and style used to celebrate the machine and motion in each painting. Answer the question in 2 parts for each painting
For the first art work, the style is quite substantial. Be lookling at this art work carefully, it shows poeple some story between sivilian and new life style. Overthrow the history background, when Industrialisation hapening, the drawer describe what a gratulation around sicilian's mind. But also from the painting style, there is quite bright colours what drawer used. And the these persons who on this painting, we can see everbody's arms are puting up, it express the labour force got free, and how exciting people's feeling.
For the seconed paniting, the style is simple. It is looks like kind of wash painting. This painting decribe about a dynamism of a dog on leash. Thinking about this painting with Industralisation, the dog is symbol people and the leash is aymbol the new time of indusralistion. Usually, before the dog go out, they need take the leash. Therefore, before Industrialisation, people's working efficiency is quite low, but when they by dint of industrialisation, people get more free more than before, and people are feel energetic because of industrialisation make lots of machine to promote their working efficiency.

3. Research Cao Fei's RMB City (2007-9)  in order to comment on this work in more depth.
RMB city is a internet suppositional cit which made by Cao fei. This work  is close with fashionable culture, and also inclued  communicate for citzen ,government, ect. This RMB city is full of metaphor of Chinese antinomy and irony of  devolopment. That is like our real city life, this suppositional city is quite morden, altitudinal entertainment and exaggerate. The government form and the pollutiong everywhere. This work has concentrate all of the Chinese  morden city's character. When the player into this game they can see the Chinese history and a lot of Chinese morden architecture and suculpture. Cao fei try to use a special way to let the common peole to understand what is happened in China on this time, this way is better than the news and website.

4. RMB City is described as a utopia/dystopia. Comment on what these terms mean, and how they can be applied to the work.
Utopia  is an ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. The word was imported from Greek, by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and fictional societies portrayed in literature. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia. For Cao fei's RMB's city, Althoug the artist put in to lots of disappoinment for this work, but we also can feeling some thing about the hope and nice point on there. As our real life city, there not just has unsatisfactory stuff, more and more are goodness and hope. Cao fei make the unsatisfactory to scratch a kind of sophistication, it also could let the best wish of utopia to stand out.On another hand, Cao fei made all of Chinese morden architectuer, sculpture, history and culture together, it also could realised the utopia that about Cao fei's work meaning.

5. Although the Modernist paintings and the contemporary digital work have emerged from
different contexts, there are also many similarities. Comment on the similarities that you can see in the work
.
First, from the main idea to thinking about that, whatever they use what kind of art skills to create thier idea, the modernist paintings and the contemporary digital work both are could catharsised the artist think. On another hand, these different two ways both could link with the problems, background and history of the time.

Week 5- Science and reason- Video art by Pipilotti Rist

1. Define the 17th century 'Scientific Revolution', and say how it changed European thought and world view.

In 1632,  Galileo proved heliocentric theory of  Copernicus. John Hadley (1682–1744) was mathematician inventor of the octant, the precursor to the sextant. Hadley also developed ways to make precision aspheric and parabolic objective mirrors for reflecting telescopes, building the first parabolic Newtonian telescope and a Gregorian telescope with accurately shaped mirrors. The Scientific Revolution was a period when new ideas in physics, astronomy, biology, human anatomy, chemistry, and other sciences led to a rejection of doctrines that had prevailed starting in Ancient Greece and continuing through the Middle Ages, and laid the foundation of modern science.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_revolution

2. Give examples of how we can we still see evidence of the 'Scientific Revolution' in the world today.

In our world, the ' Scientific Revolution ' still quite evidential. Today, we are have improved  Hadley's works. We make the astronomical telescope and use it to look into the movement detail of some planet which around earth. And this way can help scientist to research more information about universe.

3. From your research, do you think that the From your research, do you think that the contemporary art world values art work that uses new media/technology over traditional media?

From my research, I think the contemporaty art world values not just express to the viewer of visual shock, but more foucus on some meaning of artist thinking and reflect of society influence. From my option, most artist use thire own special express technology to attract audience's attention, and then people will think about the art work meaning, on this account, it is  should be get the art values.

4. How has Pipilotti Rist used new media/technology to enhance the audience's experience of her work.

Overall Pipilotti Rist's work, she is good with visual expression. Her art work are focus on life elements which around us. Similar space feeling will more easy to attract audience's attention, it is better than some art work which quite nonfigurative. I think contemporaty art value not just for artsit to understand, but also for ordinary people. Pipilotti Rist like to use vidio to express her idea. And also from her work I can see  visually luxurious and shamelessly beautiful, the exhibitions and screenings of her work are explorations into those areas of human experience which most contemporary experimental art has long surrendered to mass media or the academy.

6. Comment on the notion of 'reason' within the content of the video. Is the woman's behaviour reasonable or unreasonable?

For this question, I think should comment from tow view. First, from the law and civism, the woman's behaciour is unreasonable, she breach other people's car and break the order of society. On the other hand, this woman's behaviour is reasonable. Beacause she just use another speacial method to express and attract people's attention. I also can feeling a kind of catharsis and anger from this women's behaviour.

7. Comment on your 'reading' (understanding) of the work by discussion the aesthetic (look), experience and the ideologies (ideas, theories) of the work.

Overall Pipilotti Rist's video work, she is good with make sound, behaviour and installation to be together. Also her work is confident, not misgivings and rich colours. Her work could proved that on this time, the art video still get more competitive forces than buiness. Pipilotti's work had use nature and ordinary element, and her video is made by two diferrent video together. One of is about street and another one is nature scenery. They look like totally different style, but after thinking, audience will realiesd how the artist want to express the flower things with women. The cars are machines, in contrast to flowers which map onto nature to provide a rather stereotypical ideological association of women with nature and men with machines. Another feature of the video is its depiction of beautiful violence. Because of she as a handsman so many years, she really know about that the aesthetic standard of commonalty.
Furthermore, in her work, audience could get intensive experience easy. This way should let audience communicate more with the artisit.
5. Comment on how the installation, sound and scale of 'Ever is Over All' (1997) could impact on the audience's experience of the work.

I can see Pipilotti Rist is walking along a street lined with parked car and holding a long red hot poker flower. The dreaminess of the scene is conveyed via slow-motion, a blue colour-cast and by the fact that the woman appears to be ecstatically happy and is wearing a billowing, form-hugging gown. Overall this video,  Pipilotti Rist did not use any complicated installation, from my view, it should be just use ordinary
installation. This art video's background music is queite soft and it had aa poignant contrast with the sound of break the car window. And also Pipilotti did not choese huge scale to create her work, she just choose a part of street. In this video, when a police saw what Pipilotti doing, the police did not do noting and just past her with smile. Somehow we, the viewers, automatically associate the parked cars with a male-dominated society. It is certainly the case that an obsession with cars is a predominantly male phenomenon. And cars are machines, in contrast to flowers which map onto nature to provide a rather stereotypical ideological association of women with nature and men with machines. Another feature of the video is its depiction of beautiful violence. Rist has been highly successful in her representation of a feminised mode of violence, made possible by framing the narrative as a dreamscape. Therefore, I can realised Pipilotti reflect women's sensitivity and tough and furthermore she express women's character of challenge. Pipilotti can catch up  the psychosocial stuff and then put into her work, this way could  impact on the audience's experience of the work.

Week 3- Ron Mueck's sculpture and Humanism

1. Mueck's sculpture is described as 'hyper-real'. Define the meaning of this term and apply it to his work.

Surrealism  is literature and art and it beganing from French and Dada. It is  far-reaching influence of the visual arts. In 1920~1930, the surrealism prevails  in european literature and the arts community. Its main features is The most realistic show the true face of objective facts. Surrealism has a huge impact for the trandition view. Overthrow Mueck's work, he is good with the technique of expression for hyper-real.  He use the most nomorlly elements of our life, and he use inflated technique of expression for his work. Mueck's work has a stronly actual feeling to us, this way make people more easy to intensive experience with artsit thking.

2. Mueck is not interested in making life size sculpture. Find out why he is more interested
in working with the scale of the figure which is not life size, and mention 2 works which use
scale that is either larger or smaller than life

Mueck  interested in making not life size sculpture. All of his sculpture's elements are around people's life and he likes to use  technique of surrealism to creat his art work. He use not life size into his art work it can hlep his sculpture to outstanding mian meaning. For these two sculpture ,"Baby" and "gravida ", they are bigger than life size, form another view these are outstanding the value of life.

3. Define Renaissance Humanism , and analyze the term in order to apply it to an example of Mueck's work. Note that the contemporary definition of Humanism is much broader than the Renaissance definition.

Renaissance Humanism is a kind of thought to against feudal society. It rose in 14th century of Italy, 15,16 century to be widely disseminated in some other countries in Western Europe. The main idea of Renaissance Humanism is humane treatment , to promote individual liberation. For Mueck's work of  "gravida",. This sculpture sufficient express the artist Humanism.  In 14th century, the humanism just meaning that people want to get humane treatment, but for Mueck's humanism , he had distillation of the meaning. The most important ideal is artist wants to through his work to show something about life, thinking, respect, disappoint, ect. Mueck make Humanism to be more  detailed, and more close our life. On this acount viewer more easy to struck a responsive chord with artist.

4. Research and discuss one of Mueck's sculptures that you might find challenging or exciting to experience in an art gallery. Describe the work, upload an image of the work, and explain your personal response to the work.

This work of " Boy" made by Mueck.  This boy is vulnerable, unsure and defensive. When people see his eyes, it feeling this boy is wary gaze misses nothing. As you walk around this art work , you will become shock of the detail -- the delicately carved rolls of glesh, the hair on each limb , the gargantuan toes and intensity of the eyes with their thick eyelashes. This work was made over nine months in London for the millennium.
This  sculpture sufficient express Mueck's 'hyper-real'. Mueck also ues the elements around our life. And he most keep an eye on the details of people. For this work, Mueck wants to talk about watch attentively the world. Through his work, most thinking is about real life about our life and indivadual behaviour. On another hand, his work not use the life size. When the huge art work showing behind of your eyes, it is quite powerful to show people how hyper-real of his work.
